Southmead is a northern suburb of Bristol. It was originally a manor of the parish of Westbury on Trym. The manor house was near the south end of what is now the Southmead Road. The estate of around 300 acres was sold in the late part of the 19th century. By the late 1800s Southmead was a small hamlet on the road.
A large development of the area took place in the 1930s when 1500 homes were built over the north of Southmead Road. This was to house families from central Bristol and to cater for a general house shortage around the time. Over 1000 more homes were built after WW2 bringing more people to the area.
